Notice to Residents:
As a reminder of an existing Ordinance # 12-603, it is against City ordinance to discharge sump pumps (e.g. water in basements) into the Sanitary Sewer system. With the recent warm weather and significant rainfall the volume of sewage entering the Ishpeming Area Wastewater Authority has also seen a significant increase. This increased flow creates additional burden on the treatment plant due to treating storm water / runoff which is not sewage. Residents with sump pumps are encouraged to review their connections and ensure compliance with the ordinance.
Thank you.
Section l2-602. It shall be unlawful for any person to place into, add to, or introduce into the City sewer system any extraneous flow from and after the effective date of this ordinance. (Adopted: August 20, l980)
Section l2-603. For the purpose of this Ordinance No. l2-600, "extraneous flow" shall include the flow of water or any other liquid from drain tile, sump pumps, footing drains, roof drains, parking lots, or from any other container, basin, or holding device which collects, stores, or drains rain water, surface runoff water, or ground water.
