Keweenaw County Education: Fewer students enrolled in Grant Township School District #2 in 2022-23 school year

The only school district in Keweenaw County suffered declining enrollment in the 2022-23 school year, according to the Michigan Department of Education.

There were seven students in the halls of Grant Township School District #2, 30% less than the year before.

Enrollment in Keweenaw County outpaced the state's trend of decreasing enrollment.

Of all the students welcomed in the 2022-23 school year, 57.1% of them were girls, and 42.9% were boys.

Data also showed that all of the students enrolled in Grant Township School District #2 were white.

Grant Township School District #2 has a main office in Copper Harbor and is the only school district within Keweenaw County.

Overall student enrollment in Michigan remains below pre-pandemic levels, with white students experiencing the largest decline at 6.5%.

Academic performance has also suffered, with the state's average NAEP score dropping by 6.5 points and ethnic achievement gaps have widened. Black and Hispanic students' average math proficiency dropped by 7% in 2022, to 13.5% and 28.2%, respectively.
