Bessemer Area School District welcomed 359 students in 2022-23 school year

There were 359 students enrolled in Bessemer Area School District in the 2022-23 school year, 3.2% less than the previous year, according to the Michigan Department of Education.

Of all the students welcomed in the 2022-23 school year, 52.6% of them were girls, and 47.4% were boys.

Data also shows that most of the students were white, representing 87.5% of the Bessemer Area School District total enrollment.

Bessemer Area School District covers two schools within Gogebic County with its main office in Bessemer. Among them, Washington School recorded the highest enrollment of 190 students in the 2022-23 school year.

Overall student enrollment in Michigan remains below pre-pandemic levels, white students experiencing the largest decline at 6.5%.

Academic performance has also suffered, with the state's average NAEP score dropping by 6.5 points and ethnic achievement gaps widening. Black and Hispanic students' average math proficiency dropped by 7% in 2022, to 13.5% and 28.2%, respectively.
