NMU athletics schedules busy week across multiple sports

Northern Michigan University (NMU) Athletics has a busy schedule this week, with multiple events taking place across various sports.

On Thursday, September 12, the men's soccer team will face Lewis at 2 PM. The women's soccer team will play against Cedarville in Midland, Michigan at 3 PM. Additionally, the dedication of Vandament Arena is scheduled for 3 PM. Later that day, the volleyball team will compete against Findlay at 5 PM, with a special Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day offering a free box of popcorn to those with an NMU ID.

Friday's schedule includes a volleyball match against Minnesota Duluth in Houghton, Michigan at 3 PM.

Saturday features several events: the volleyball team will play St. Cloud State in Houghton at 10 AM; men's soccer will face Thomas More at noon; women's soccer will compete against Northwood at noon; and the football team will take on UW-La Crosse at 2 PM.

The men's soccer team began their season with two road victories, defeating Northwood 1-0 and Quincy 2-0. Goal scorers included Justin Alfaro, Tommaso Lami, and Teun Van Gansewinkel. Nils Cedergren recorded two shutouts as goalkeeper. Their home opener is set for Thursday against Lewis.

The women's soccer team had mixed results on their opening weekend, winning against Minnesota Duluth 6-1 but losing to St. Cloud State 2-1. Madison Bilbia scored twice in their victory over Minnesota Duluth. This weekend they will play Cedarville and Northwood on Northwood’s campus.

The volleyball team performed well at the Maverick Invite in Minnesota with three wins out of four matches. Jacqueline Smith led with 68 kills over the four matches, including a career-best performance against Truman State. Allie Barlow contributed significantly with 163 assists and Meghan Meyer maintained a .391 attack percentage. They will inaugurate Vandament Arena on Thursday against Findlay after a dedication ceremony.

The football team faced Kentucky Wesleyan last Thursday but lost 33-13. Freshman Jahi Wood had an impressive debut with 96 rushing yards on 14 carries while Nico Lukkarinen scored one touchdown and Michael Karlen added two field goals. They aim for their first win this Saturday against UW-La Crosse.
