The Northern Michigan Wildcats faced a challenging game against Grand Valley State University, ranked second nationally, at Lubbers Stadium in Allendale, Michigan. The Saturday night match concluded with a 49-17 victory for GVSU.
In a game characterized by its focus on the running game, both teams relied heavily on ground attacks. NMU managed to gain 206 rushing yards, while GVSU achieved 288 yards. Vince Martin led NMU's effort with a career-high of 82 rushing yards and a touchdown. Elizin Rouse and Jahi Wood also contributed significantly with 55 and 48 yards respectively. Tucker Welch added to the score with a 16-yard run resulting in a touchdown.
On the defensive side, Kade Manzo secured his second career interception, and Tim Shannon made eight tackles along with breaking up one pass. Mike Karlen maintained his perfect kicking record by successfully making his only field goal attempt from 32 yards and converting two extra-point attempts.
GVSU's offensive success was highlighted by scores from five different rushers and capitalizing on three turnovers from NMU through fumble recoveries.
Looking ahead, the Wildcats will return to the Superior Dome to face the Roosevelt Lakers on Saturday, October 19. This encounter marks their first-ever meeting against the new GLIAC team.
