State Representative Karl Bohnak has cast his vote in favor of eliminating state income tax for retired state corrections officers. The bill, House Bill 4201, passed the House with support from both parties. This legislation aims to rectify a previous oversight where state corrections officers were not included in an earlier effort to eliminate state income tax for other public safety retirees.
Bohnak emphasized the importance of corrections officers within the judicial system. "Let’s be clear: our corrections officers are the backbone of our judicial system, and they play a vital role in protecting and serving our communities," said Bohnak, R-Deerton. He expressed satisfaction that there is now a plan to ensure these workers receive all their deserved retirement benefits.
The proposed legislation allows retired state corrections workers to fully deduct their pensions from state income taxes. With its passage in the House, the bill will now proceed to the Senate for further deliberation.
