Lake Superior State University (LSSU) will honor three alumni at the upcoming Alumni Awards Ceremony during Great Lake State Weekend, scheduled for October 25, 2025. The event will take place at 11:30 a.m. in the Walker Cisler Center. Tickets are required for entry and must be purchased in advance through the LSSU Alumni Relations website, as none will be available at the door.

Great Lake State Weekend is an annual event that brings together alumni, students, faculty, and community members for a range of activities. This year’s schedule includes Laker Hockey games against Bowling Green, campus open houses, and family-oriented events designed to strengthen ties among attendees. The full agenda can be found on the LSSU Alumni Relations website.

The university has named Dr. Richard Gray as the recipient of the Outstanding Alumnus Award. Dr. Gray graduated in 1991 and currently serves as CEO of Mayo Clinic Arizona. He is recognized internationally for his work as a surgical oncologist. “His leadership at one of the nation’s top medical centers underscores the impact of LSSU alumni in healthcare,” according to the university.

Marisa Berlinger, who graduated in 2013, will receive the Paul E. Ripley Award for Young Alumni. Berlinger is an attorney with Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP in Seattle and is noted for her involvement in public interest litigation. She founded a scholarship program and was a national award finalist for her contributions to law.

Dr. Christopher Merrett, class of 1986, has been selected for the Kenneth J. Shouldice Professional Achievement Award. He is Dean for Innovation and Economic Development and Director of the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs. Dr. Merrett has played a significant role in shaping rural economic policy across the United States.

“These honorees exemplify the university’s commitment to excellence, leadership, and service,” said university officials.
