Lake Superior State University will induct four new members into its Athletics Hall of Fame during Great Lake State Weekend 2025. The event will take place on Saturday, October 25, at the Walker Cisler Center in Sault Ste. Marie.

The 2025 class includes Kord Cernich, a former men’s hockey player from 1986 to 1990; Jerry Cheynet, who coached men’s wrestling from 1969 to 1974; Lee Ann (Huffman) Wise, a women’s basketball player from 1979 to 1983; and the entire 1972-73 LSSU wrestling team.

The induction ceremony is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., coinciding with the Alumni Awards. Later that evening, inductees will also be recognized during the first intermission of the LSSU men’s hockey game against Bowling Green.

Tickets for the event are available online through the LSSU Alumni website and must be purchased in advance, as they are not sold at the door.

According to Lake Superior State University, “Great Lake State Weekend offer something for everyone, from student-focused events like Lake State After Hours to community favorites such as the Battle of the Bands. A complete schedule and more information can be found on the LSSU Alumni Relations website.”

Kord Cernich played a key role in LSSU's first NCAA national championship hockey team in 1988 and was named an All-American and All-CCHA selection. He set an NCAA record by playing in 175 consecutive games before moving on to a professional career in North America and Europe.

Jerry Cheynet guided LSSU wrestling teams to success between 1969 and 1974. His leadership included an undefeated season in 1972–73, three NAIA District championships, and producing NCAA All-Americans.

Lee Ann (Huffman) Wise holds both all-time and single-season assist records for women’s basketball at LSSU. She later spent three decades working in education as a principal and coach.

The undefeated 1972–73 wrestling team won the GLIAC Championship that year and placed eleventh at the NAIA National Championships under national champion Jim Fallis.
