The Northern Michigan University men's soccer team lost 3-1 to the Davenport Panthers in a road match in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Despite outshooting Davenport 19-15 and putting eight shots on target compared to the Panthers' nine, NMU could not overcome a three-goal deficit from the first half.
Davenport received three yellow cards during the match, while NMU was given one. The Panthers established control early in the game, scoring their first goal after earning a free kick just outside the left corner of the NMU box. Charlie Davis converted the set piece into a goal for Davenport.
Both teams traded opportunities following the opening goal. Northern Michigan increased its offensive pressure and earned several chances, including a corner kick in the 21st minute, but Davenport's defense managed to block multiple shot attempts. NMU's Luca Rosen had several close-range efforts denied by Panthers goalkeeper Beau Hudd.
In the 29th minute, Easton Lopez forced a turnover inside NMU's box and assisted Davis for his second goal of the day. Although Northern Michigan defended against three consecutive Panther corner kicks later in the half, Dugan Black scored just before halftime to give Davenport a 3-0 lead at the break.
The Wildcats intensified their attack in the second half and found success in the 81st minute when Max Rebori passed to Triston Nelson, who scored his first goal of the season for NMU. However, this late effort was not enough as Davenport held on for victory.
Northern Michigan will next play Saginaw Valley State University on Sunday, October 19, with kickoff scheduled for 11 a.m. in University Center, Michigan.
