A government shutdown began on October 1 after the Senate did not pass legislation to keep federal agencies funded. Representative Jack Bergman, who has represented Michigan’s 1st district in Congress since 2017, stated that he voted for a bipartisan continuing resolution last month that would have prevented the shutdown and extended funding through November 21. According to Bergman, "Unfortunately, Senate Democrats blocked a straightforward measure."
Bergman expressed concern about the effects of the shutdown: "The American people deserve better than political games that disrupt critical services and create unnecessary uncertainty for families, Veterans, and small businesses. My focus remains on restoring common sense and fiscal responsibility in Washington so we can fund the government, support our Servicemembers, and deliver real results for Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula."
Bergman's offices remain operational during the shutdown to assist constituents with issues related to federal agencies. He advised those needing help to call his office at 231-944-7633 for assistance with paperwork so cases can be processed when operations resume. While his Washington, D.C., office is open to visitors, tours and flag requests are unavailable during this period.
He provided updates on how various federal agencies are affected:
- Social Security benefits will continue but processing times for verifications or disability claims may be delayed.
- Medicare and Medicaid programs will operate as usual.
- The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will keep all medical centers and clinics open; benefits such as compensation, pensions, education, and housing assistance will still be processed. However, some VA services like regional benefits offices or career counseling may be affected.
- Mail delivery by the U.S. Postal Service continues without interruption.
- The Farm Service Agency (FSA) is servicing farm loans but some processes may take longer.
- Transportation Security Administration (TSA) operations continue but travelers might face longer wait times at airports.
- Passport processing could take longer than normal; U.S. consular services abroad remain open.
Bergman concluded: "If you have any questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office. My team and I remain committed to serving you throughout this shutdown and to working toward a swift, responsible resolution."
Jack Bergman was born in Shakopee, Minnesota in 1947. He lives in Watersmeet and holds degrees from Gustavus Adolphus College (1969) and the University of West Florida.
