Sen. Schmidt votes to fund autism, opioid addiction programs affected by Whitmer's vetoes

Budget01

State Sen. Wayne Schmidt (R-Traverse City) issued a statement after voting to fund programs affected by Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s vetoes.

According to Schmidt’s office, the legislation – Senate Bills 376 and 377 – would restore a total of $573.5 million of the governor’s vetoed funding and administrative funding transfers. Several critical state services will receive much-needed money.

“There is simply too much at stake to do nothing and this is a good first step in getting back on course,” Schmidt said in a press release. “I’d like to think we could all agree that the things we funded yesterday are crucial programs and it is my hope that the governor will sign the bills into law.”

The legislation aims to place money back into programs devoted to addressing Alzheimer’s disease, autism and opioid addiction. Other areas that will receive funding are law enforcement and education.

Schmidt said that the governor’s vetoes “drastically impacted schools in my district.”

The Senate vote took place Dec. 4.
