CITY OF HOLLAND: Holland Fire Department responds to an early afternoon fire in a residence 516 West 20th

City of Holland issued the following announcement on Jan. 5

Today at 2:32 PM firefighters responded to 516 West 20th for fire in a residence.  It was indicated that occupants may be inside. Approximately 4 minutes later, the first arriving firefighter reported heavy fire involving the front of the single family residence. One occupant was outside the residence at this time and appeared to be injured. As additional units arrived on scene crews initiated efforts to extinguish the fire and immediately search the residence for any additional occupants. It was soon learned that all occupants were accounted for however there were two pet dogs, which were later located and removed by fire crews. One of them was conscious and alert however the second was unresponsive. Firefighters immediately initiated resuscitation efforts on the second animal utilizing a pet response kit and CPR, however it succumbed to the injuries it sustained in the fire.

The injured occupant encountered by firefighters upon arrival, was evaluated on scene and was treated and transported to Holland Hospital by AMR for further evaluation and treatment. Information on the patient's condition is unknown at this time however the patient was conscious, alert and oriented while on scene. 

Damage estimates are not available at this time however the home sustained significant damage throughout. As for the cause, the department's Fire Marshal has initiated an investigation to determine the origin and cause of the fire.

Other agencies, responding and assisting during the incident included the Holland Police Department, the department's Victim's Services Unit and the Ottawa County Volunteers for canteen services. During the incident, coverage for additional responses in the city was provided by the Hamilton Fire Department and Holland Township Fire Department. The Graafschap Fire Department assisted on scene.
