The Northern Michigan Wildcats men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Lake Erie Storm in Painesville, Ohio, wrapping up their non-conference schedule and completing their longest road trip of the season.
The Wildcats took the lead about 30 minutes into the match. Davian Gumbs won possession on the far touch line, beat a defender, and passed to Teun Van Gansewinkel, who scored. The Storm tied the game with just over three minutes left when Benjamin Lerida converted a cross from Velijko Radovanovic.
Northern Michigan outshot Lake Erie 7-4 and limited them to one shot attempt in the first half. Both teams scored on their only shot on target. Four Wildcats—Alessandro Scialanga, James Carr, Owen Rutledge, and Terry Grimaldi—along with goalkeeper Asaf Kristal played the full ninety minutes. Quint Van Roij and Andrea Mercanti also logged significant playing time.
Van Gansewinkel led all players with three shots and had NMU’s only shot on goal. There were four yellow cards in total, two for each team; Scialanga and Rosen received bookings for Northern Michigan.
Looking ahead, the Wildcats will begin GLIAC conference play at home against Parkside Rangers on Friday, September 19.
