On Jan. 2, over 1,000 area residents showed up at the Houghton County Courthouse to support the Café Rosetta diner in Calumet.
Café Rosetta has refused to close indoor dining, despite a state executive order against it due to COVID-19. The state of Michigan instituted a 3-week "pause" on indoor dining back on Nov. 18, which then was extended until Jan. 15, and then extended again until Monday, Feb.1, a date which is not set in stone.
“We’re always here to keep the peace and keep calm and keep people’s wits about them. We’re constitutional officers, and we’re here to stand up for everybody’s right,” Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean said, according to The Mining Journal. "Everybody has an opinion about something, and nobody is wrong with voicing an opinion. It’s all about peaceful assembly and freedom of speech.”
According to The Mining Journal, supporters of the diner launched a GoFundMe campaign on Dec. 18 with a goal of $130,000 to be raised for fighting the cafe’s legal battles.
