Two Advance to State Bowling Finals

Bowling

Breitung Township School District recently issued the following announcement.

The Mountaineer (Co-op) bowling teams traveled to Monitor Lanes in Bay City this past weekend to bowl in the MHSAA Division 2 Region 7 Regional Bowling Tournament. “While our boys’ team fell short of qualifying, we had success in the singles event,” said Coach Pete Tomassoni. To qualify for the State Finals, teams must be in the top three to move on. MHSAA advances the top 10 individual bowlers from each region to the State Finals. Senior Marcus Doucette and Sophomore Emily Lautzenheiser of Kingsford High School will travel to Super Bowl in Canton, Michigan and bowl in the boy’s and girl’s State Finals Singles Events on Saturday, March 5.

Friday found the Mountaineer teams vying for one of the three coveted spots. The Mountaineer men found themselves as high as the fourth spot after the six Baker games. “Unfortunately, we needed team games over 1000 to move on, and we couldn’t quite get there,” said Tomassoni. Iron Mountain placed 7th in the Regional.

Bright and early Saturday morning, the boys’ Singles Event kicked off with 81 young men bowling six qualifying games. Doucette fashioned a 1333 six game set, averaging 221 along the way to place sixth. Games of 225, 246, 224, 237, 207 and 194 solidified his position. Hunter Lancour from Escanaba High School will also travel to Canton with an eighth place finish of 1317. “All Mountaineers bowled extremely well, everyone was over average,” said Tomassoni. KHS Senior Alex Reed placed 20th with 1226, averaging 204 for the morning. Reed also had high games of 247 and 237. Sophomore Nolan White from KHS placed 24th, carrying a 199 average, tossing an 1197 which featured a 268 game. IMHS Senior Hunter Lautzenheiser was 32nd with 1156, averaging 192 and tossing a high game of 230. Fellow IMHS Senior Dakota Jaeger was 45th at 1090 and KHS Freshman Blake Flaminio finished in 54th place with a 1055.

The lanes were then turned over to 67 ladies looking to earn one of ten spots that would extend their season one more week. Lautzenheiser was never far from the cut line during her run, being as high as 8th place and as low as 14th place after game 5. A steady sixth game vaulted her over three other young ladies, putting her at 10th and sending her to the State Finals. Averaging 171, Lautzenheiser fashioned a 1026 total, rolling games of 153, 202, 137, 191, 171 and 172. Following their male counterparts, sophomore McKenna Trulock from KHS and freshman Abby Ward also bowled well over their averages. Trulock placed 31st with an 867, starting with a high game of 177 and averaging 144. Ward averaged 123 to place 46th with a 742, rolling a high game of 170.

“I am ecstatic with how everyone bowled. All the kids finished in the top 2/3 of their respective fields”, stated Tomassoni.
