EAST LANSING, Mich. — In honor of Veterans Day, community members and members of the media are invited to attend a brief wreath-laying ceremony at East Lansing’s Medal of Honor Memorial and Veterans Monument on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 11:30 a.m.
The City of East Lansing and the Lansing-based 1st Battalion, 24th Marines will be laying wreaths to honor all the brave men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces. This includes U.S. Marine Corps Reserve 2nd Lt. Sherrod E. Skinner Jr., a Korean war hero who grew up in East Lansing and, while a student at Harvard, entered the Marine Corps Reserve Platoon Leaders program with his twin brother. 2nd Lt. Skinner was killed in battle on October 26, 1952 and was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for his bravery.
East Lansing’s Medal of Honor Memorial and Veterans Monument are located on the main entry grounds of the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road.
