DTE Energy claims that the rate increase is necessary to comply with the state's existing clean energy goals. However, Greene argues that these requirements are much smaller compared to the new clean energy mandates proposed by Democrats. The recently signed "100% clean energy" laws, supported by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, will effectively ban natural gas power plants and instead prioritize the use of wind and solar energy.
