The Northern Michigan University football team faced a challenging start to their conference play, suffering a defeat against Saginaw Valley State University with a final score of 63-14. The game took place on Saturday afternoon in Marquette, Michigan.
In the first half, Northern's Jahi Wood scored his first career touchdown. However, the team struggled defensively, allowing 35 points in the second quarter and trailing 42-7 by halftime.
During the third quarter, Northern Michigan capitalized on a blocked punt deep in Cardinal territory. Vince Martin also marked his first career touchdown rush for NMU. Despite these efforts, Saginaw Valley responded with three long touchdowns of 38 yards, 54 yards, and 62 yards to secure their victory.
Statistically, the Cardinals outperformed the Wildcats with a total yardage of 486 compared to NMU's 183. Michael Love stood out for Northern Michigan by achieving over 100 receiving yards for the second consecutive game, totaling 103 yards on six catches. Defensively, Mitch Larkin led all players with eight tackles.
Looking ahead, the Wildcats are set to face Grand Valley State Lakers next Saturday on October 12 at 7 p.m.
