Alessandro Scialanga, a sophomore defender from Northern Michigan University's men's soccer team, has been named to the 2024 D2CCA All-Midwest Region Second Team. The announcement was made by the Conference Commissioners Association (CCA) on Tuesday.
Scialanga played a crucial role for the Wildcats this season, starting in every match and leading the team in minutes played, assists, and points. He recorded one multi-goal game and scored one game-winning goal. Scialanga is one of only two true sophomores on the second team and joins forward Jayden Cameron of Saginaw Valley State as the only athletes from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) on this list.
In addition to Scialanga and Cameron, forward Phillip Caputo of St. Cloud State was named Midwest Region Player of the Year and earned a first-team selection. Midfielder Easton Lopez of Davenport also received first-team honors. These four players are among 26 selected for All-Midwest region teams.
"Congratulations to Alessandro for being voted for the all-region second team!" said head coach Alex Fatovic. "Ale is a special player, person, and is motivated by overall team success rather than individual awards, but it's always nice to be recognized by your peers."
Fatovic praised Scialanga's dedication: "Ale typically is the first player at training, the last to leave, and works very hard outside of team training. We want all our young players to recognize that talent alone doesn't get you where you want to be; it's more about sacrifice and hard work, and Alessandro exemplifies that despite also being incredibly talented. Well done, Ale!"
The D2CCA Men's Soccer All-Region Teams were selected by sports information directors from NCAA Division II schools within the Midwest region. Those chosen for the first team will advance to consideration for All-American voting.
The Division II Conference Commissioners Association promotes high standards of sportsmanship in Division II athletics as an integral part of higher education.
