FOIA Request Sent to Chippewa County Election Division Regarding Upcoming Election Candidates on February 5, 2025

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the Chippewa County Election Division in Michigan on February 5, 2025. The request, sent by us at UP Gazette, sought comprehensive details about all candidates running for the upcoming spring election.

The specific information requested included the full names of the candidates - first, middle and last names. We also asked for the office each candidate is running for and its jurisdiction. Furthermore, we requested the party affiliation of each candidate.

In addition to these details, we also sought contact information for each candidate. This includes their address, phone number, and email address.

As a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, access to public records is essential for us at UP Gazette. It allows us to fulfill our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.

We believe that as members of the media involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act § 15.231 et seq.

We await a response from the Chippewa County Election Division regarding this request.
