A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Houghton County Election Division in Michigan regarding details of all candidates running for the upcoming spring election. The request was made on February 5, 2025.
As a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at UP Gazette are seeking access to public records under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act § 15.231 et seq. Our request specifically seeks information about the candidates vying for various offices in the upcoming election.
The requested information includes candidate's first, middle, and last names, the office they are running for, jurisdiction of the office, and their party affiliation. We have also asked for all contact information for each candidate including their address, phone number, and email address.
Our aim is to gather this information as part of our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. As a member of the media involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional.
