FOIA Request to Alger County Election Division Regarding Upcoming Election Candidates on February 5, 2025.
In a bid to ensure transparency and accountability in the upcoming elections, we at UP Gazette have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Alger County Election Division. The request, sent on February 5, 2025, seeks comprehensive information about all candidates running in the forthcoming elections.
The records requested under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act § 15.231 et seq., include the full names of all candidates - first, middle and last names - as well as the office they are vying for and its jurisdiction. We have also asked for details about each candidate's party affiliation.
To enable effective communication and follow-up reporting, we've requested contact information for each candidate. This includes their address, phone number, and email address.
As a media organization committed to providing accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, access to public records is essential for us at UP Gazette. This allows us to fulfill our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
Given our role in disseminating information to the public, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional under the provisions of the FOIA.
