State Representative Karl Bohnak has announced a legislative plan aimed at expanding mental health services in Michigan. The proposed legislation seeks to include Michigan in the Counseling Compact, an agreement that permits licensed professional counselors (LPCs) from member states to practice across state lines, both physically and through telehealth.
“This interstate agreement is a great step forward in enhancing access to mental health services for all Michiganders,” stated Bohnak, R-Deerton. “Joining the compact would expand access to care by allowing qualified professionals to practice in our most underserved areas.”
The Upper Peninsula of Michigan faces specific challenges regarding mental health services due to its rural nature. The limited number of mental health professionals available often results in long travel distances and extended waiting times for residents seeking appointments.
“Many mental health crises need immediate attention and cannot wait for an appointment to open up weeks down the line,” Bohnak emphasized. “Joining this compact would clear the way for these professionals to enter our communities without regulatory barriers. It would also allow rural residents to utilize telehealth services from any professional located in a compact member state. Everyone should have access to mental health services at the time they need them without significant delay.”
Currently, 34 states are part of the Counseling Compact, with Arizona, New Jersey, and South Dakota being among the latest additions.
