State Representative Karl Bohnak recently presented his case to the House Health Policy Committee, advocating for a proposal aimed at broadening mental health services in Michigan. The proposed legislation, known as House Bill 4591, seeks to integrate Michigan into the Counseling Compact. This initiative would enable licensed professional counselors from member states to operate across state boundaries, providing services both in person and through telehealth.

Rep. Bohnak emphasized the benefits of this plan by stating, "My plan would expand access to care by clearing the way for qualified professionals to practice in our state, which will especially benefit our underserved communities." He further noted that similar compact agreements have been effective for other medical professionals and expressed confidence that extending such opportunities to counselors could help address Michigan's growing mental health challenges.

The bill is currently under consideration by the House Health Policy Committee and awaits a potential vote.
