State Representative Karl Bohnak testified before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor and Economic Opportunity, advocating for a $900,000 state grant. The funding aims to replace Ishpeming's aging frontline pumper truck. This vehicle is crucial for serving around 8,200 residents in the city and nearby townships.
The proposed grant is intended to be part of the state budget. It would enable the purchase of a modern pumper truck equipped to enhance emergency response capabilities. Bohnak highlighted the urgency by stating, “This equipment is in danger of failing when it’s needed most.” He emphasized that a new vehicle would lower maintenance costs and improve safety and response times.
Currently, Ishpeming's primary truck is over two decades old and increasingly unreliable. Maintenance expenses have surged beyond 30% of its value, causing delays and failures during emergencies.
Bohnak expressed concern for local firefighters' safety: “The firefighters in Ishpeming are putting themselves on the line every day, and they deserve equipment they can count on.” He stressed that securing this grant would ensure readiness in protecting residents.
