The Senate Committee on Appropriations has approved the 2025 recommendations for Natural Resources Trust Fund (NRTF) development and acquisition projects. Senator John Damoose, R-Harbor Springs, expressed support for the initiative, stating, "The Natural Resources Trust Fund helps protect and enhance access to Michigan’s natural resources." He emphasized the importance of these funds in providing recreational opportunities across Michigan.
The NRTF is financed by interest earnings from state-owned mineral rights and is constitutionally restricted to recreation improvements and land acquisitions. The approved recommendations allocate nearly $42 million for 68 recreation development projects and 17 land acquisition projects.
In the 37th Senate District, over $2.3 million will be distributed among seven projects. These include $400,000 for the Ottaway Crossing Footbridge in Grand Traverse County, which will connect trails across the Boardman-Ottaway River. Central Lake will receive $237,500 to develop a new fishing pier on Lake Street with accessible amenities.
Other projects include $400,000 for redeveloping Whitefish Point State Harbor in Chippewa County, $400,000 for Nakwema trail development in Charlevoix County, and $193,700 for accessibility improvements at Thurston Park in Central Lake. Boyne City Open Space project will receive $322,000 for various enhancements. Additionally, $400,000 is allocated for extending the Three Mile Trail in East Bay Township.
Senator Damoose remarked on the significance of these developments: "These projects will help highlight just how much our region has to offer." He affirmed his support during the committee vote and expressed eagerness to advance this bill through the Legislature.
