FOIA Request to Iron County Election Division Regarding Information on Upcoming Election Candidates on February 5, 2025.
A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent by UP Gazette, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, to the Iron County Election Division in Michigan. The request was made under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act § 15.231 et seq., with a preference for an electronic format response.
The information requested includes a list of all candidates running in the upcoming election. The specifics required for each candidate are their first, middle, and last names; the office they are running for; jurisdiction of the office; and party affiliation.
In addition to this, UP Gazette has also requested contact information for each candidate. This includes their address, phone number, and email address.
As members of the media, we at UP Gazette believe that access to public records is essential in fulfilling our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we have requested a fee waiver as media professionals.
