The Marquette City Fire Department is collaborating with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for Fire Prevention Week, which takes place from October 5 to 11, 2025. This year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” focusing on safe practices when using devices powered by lithium-ion batteries.
According to the department, most household electronics such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, power tools, and toys rely on lithium-ion batteries. While these batteries are common and convenient, they can pose fire risks if used incorrectly or damaged. The department urges residents to be aware of which devices in their homes use these batteries.
“Lithium-ion batteries are powerful, convenient, and they’re just about everywhere.” The statement continues: “This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign helps people understand the importance of using these batteries correctly to prevent fires in the home and to follow the Buy, Charge, and Recycle Safely approach.”
Residents are encouraged to purchase only products that have a stamp from a nationally recognized testing lab to ensure safety standards are met. The department warns that some products sold online or in stores may not meet these standards and could increase fire risk.
For charging safety, officials advise always using the cords provided by manufacturers and following their instructions. Devices should be charged on hard surfaces rather than beds or couches to avoid overheating. Overcharging should also be avoided by unplugging devices once fully charged.
Proper disposal of lithium-ion batteries is also highlighted. These batteries should not be thrown away with regular trash or recycling because they can catch fire. Instead, residents are encouraged to use dedicated battery recycling locations such as those listed at call2recycle.org.
The Marquette City Fire Department will host several events during Fire Prevention Week. A firetruck static display is scheduled for Saturday, October 4 at 11 a.m., followed by a parade at 12:30 p.m. If it rains, the event will move to October 11.
