Sophomore forward Ian Weimer has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Offensive Player of the Week for week nine. This is the first time Weimer, a native of Mariette, Ohio, has received this honor.
Weimer's recent performance contributed to the Northern Michigan University men's soccer team's successful run, with goals in three straight matches. Over the weekend, he scored in both games as NMU defeated Roosevelt 2-1 and Purdue Northwest 3-0. His goal against Roosevelt was the game-winner and played a role in preventing the Lakers from repeating as GLIAC Regular Season champions.
In Sunday's match against Purdue Northwest, Weimer added another goal that helped move NMU into third place in the conference standings. The team finished the regular season with seven wins, marking its best record to date.
Weimer started both games over the weekend, playing 73 and 83 minutes respectively. He took three shots and converted both of his shots on target into goals. Since being given an increased role at the start of October, he has recorded four goals and one assist across eight games and currently holds a three-game goal streak going into postseason play.
Head coach Alex Fatovic commented on Weimer's recognition: "Well-deserved award for Ian! He has been absolutely lethal for the last few weeks. Every touch, every shot, and his overall work rate have been instrumental in our recent run of form, and then he adds two goals to help us cap off a great senior weekend. Well done, Ian!"
This season, Weimer’s totals for goals (4), points (9), and game-winning goals (2) are second only to teammate Rosen (9 goals, 20 points, 4 game-winners).
With regular season play concluded, NMU will host a GLIAC Quarterfinal match at home for only the second time in program history. After their win over Purdue Northwest in the regular season finale, NMU will again face seventh-seeded Purdue Northwest at home next Sunday at 1 p.m.
A running list shows other Wildcats who have earned weekly honors this season: Owen Rutledge (Defensive – Week 2), Luca Rosen (Offensive – Weeks 6 & 8), Asaf Kristal (Defensive – Week 6), and now Ian Weimer (Offensive – Week 9).
