The City of Houghton has announced details for its annual natural yard debris and fall clean-up program. Residents are permitted to drop off yard debris, including leaves, small branches, and yard clippings, at the Public Works Garage located at the corner of Technical Avenue and Gundlach Road. The drop-off site is open from April to November, weather permitting, on the east side of the Salt Storage Building. Yard debris must be separated into two areas: one for leaves and clippings, and another for small branches and tree trimmings. Signs are posted to guide residents.
Proof of residency is required to use this service.
For fall clean-up, residents can bring certain items to the Public Works Garage between Friday, September 26th and Sunday, October 26th. Dumpsters will be available only on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during this period. Accepted items include wood pieces under four feet in length, bricks, and metal that can be placed in a designated dumpster. Items not accepted include furniture, clothes, tires, cardboard, paint or empty paint cans, household garbage, or lightbulbs.
Senior citizens aged 65 or older and individuals with disabilities who live in single-family homes may request curbside pick-up if they are unable to deliver items themselves. The public works crew will collect eligible yard debris (with all branches under four feet long) and other accepted materials directly from their property on scheduled dates: September 29th, October 13th, and October 27th. Those interested should call the City office at 482-1700 to be added to the list for collection.
"Please call the City office (482-1700) and ask to be put on the list for one of the dates."
Residents are reminded that all collected materials must remain on their own property until picked up by city crews.
