City Seeks Applicants for 2023 East Lansing Emerging Leaders Program

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The City of East Lansing is now accepting applications for its 2023 East Lansing Emerging Leaders Program.

Applications for the year-long program are available online at www.cityofeastlansing.com/emergingleaders. The deadline to apply for the program is Friday, January 6, 2023.

The East Lansing Emerging Leaders Program is a year-long course in civic engagement designed to educate today’s emerging leaders. Graduates of the program have gone on to serve the East Lansing community on neighborhood groups, boards, commissions and the East Lansing City Council.

Participants in the Emerging Leaders Program will meet on the third Thursday of each month from 5-8 p.m. The program will begin with a welcome reception in February and end with a graduation ceremony in December. Instructors include a range of local business, community and government leaders on topics such as: election administration; diversity, equity and inclusion; the built environment; the impact of MSU on the region; environment, sustainability and transportation; finance and budgeting; public safety; economic development; and parks, recreation and arts.

“The Emerging Leaders Program was created to educate citizens about the importance of local government and civic engagement,” said East Lansing City Manager George Lahanas. “We hope that the 2023 participants will be inspired to take an active role in local government and the East Lansing community.”

Applicants must be residents of the City of East Lansing (either as homeowners or renters), at least 18 years of age and cannot be running for, or currently serving in, any elected office. Applications will be reviewed through a selection process with applicants notified by Jan. 20 as to whether they have been accepted into the program.

While the City covers a majority of program costs, there is a $55 program fee that will be charged to participants to help offset costs associated with running the program. The City has also made scholarships available for eligible residents. Interested community members can learn more at www.cityofeastlansing.com/emergingleaders.
