State Rep. Dave Prestin of Cedar River is warning about the potential for Michigan Democrats to ban semi-automatic rifles. He raised concerns following statements made by State Senator Rosemary Bayer and Governor Gretchen Whitmer hinting at future firearm restrictions. Senator Bayer mentioned on a TV show that a ban on lawfully owned firearms could be on the horizon, stating, “never say never” and “we got the first round of stuff through, we’re not gonna stop.” She also indicated that such legislation might not move forward during an election year, leaving the door open for future action.

Rep. Prestin expressed his apprehension about the Democrats' intentions, emphasizing that they might attempt to implement a firearm ban when they face less scrutiny from voters. He highlighted the potential consequences of one-party dominance in Michigan, stating, “The longer Democrats hold complete control in Michigan, the more likely they will try and jam a firearm ban down our throats.”

In response to proposals for increased regulations on gun ownership, including local approval for purchases and waiting periods, Prestin defended the rights of gun owners. He asserted, “It’s my job to defend people from government overreach. Banning legally owned firearms or adding unnecessary bureaucracy to lawful purchases are radical infringements on our rights that won’t be tolerated in Michigan and especially won’t be tolerated in the Upper Peninsula.”

Prestin vowed to continue advocating for the preservation of Second Amendment rights and ensuring that future generations can enjoy the same freedoms.
