City of Marquette issued the following announcement on Nov. 25
With the Holiday season upon us, the City of Marquette Arts & Culture Center wants to remind the public to support your local artists! With many local establishments selling artwork, make sure to find that perfect one-of-a-kind gift while supporting the local creative economy!
With that being said, we are excited to announce a new exhibit that on display in City Hall until Dec. 27. This exhibit will feature local artist Julie Highlen. Julie is a painter who enjoys painting the landscapes of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. She lives near Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and other scenic areas, so she’s never short on inspiration. Most of her paintings are created with acrylics, using personal photo references from her many outdoor adventures.
My paintings tend to be contemplative. Whether depicting a lone tree, a calm lake or Lake Superior in full action, a single boulder in the water with cedars miraculously growing out of it or a massive wall of sandstone, I want the viewer to take in not just the beauty of nature, but the strength and resilience of it as well. Lake Superior and this rugged, north country, along with its weather, have many moods and I hope to capture them in my paintings. To that end, I am constantly thinking about painting prospects any time I am outdoors and enjoy gaining different perspectives from hiking, canoeing, kayaking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
